History tram and trolleybus
On the so-called “night of museums” in 2014 in Nizhny Novgorod we were in trolley Museum or more precisely of electrotransport. This little-known attraction is located near the center (at the depot number 1), but, even so, getting there is not easy. We arrived by car, hardly found a place for Parking on a small patch in front of the gate and entered across rails. Sightseeing took about forty minutes, we had a little chat with the “tour guide”, which held a tour for spontaneously formed group. Unfortunately, we has only one “litmus” baby :), but he ran and pulled levers as three.
About the location of the tram museum and how to get there, see below, and now…
9 trams and 2 trolley, which once rode through the streets of the city, allow us to estimate the history of electric transport in Nizhny Novgorod from the very beginnings to the present day. It all began in 1896 with the tram “Oerlikon”, which is presented in a collection of restored for the film in 1987 instance. By the way, apart from Kiev, now the Russian is not considered, tram Nizhny Novgorod – Russia’s first.
Any item can be touched by hands. You may to sit in the driver’s cab and passenger ‘seat’, from wooden to leatherette, pull handles. Is that so happiness for a child. And adults were interested to learn about with what “comfort” our ancestors was traveling in public transport. Narrow and wide doors, comfortable and not very ladders, “ergonomic” passenger seats and strict for drivers. Children expanse.
Pay attention to the modern update :). Speedometer, type “balloon”. In this case, the wind speed measured, but if the focus (and someone to relax) … it seems that the tram rides.
In comparison with Locomotive Museum here is cleaner, there are signs, and note that Trolley Museum is located almost in the garden. Equipment is maintained in a pleasant eye condition. They say that you can get on the tour, but not easy, and in the building of the depot there are a room with models and photographs. We do not appreciate this, but we hope to get there, a ride on the tram-cafe , plying in Nizhny Novgorod. just one of the stops is in the museum of electrotransport.
Traditionally to go virtual tour with us through the Museum of electric transport, you can use gallery.
We heard from one woman some interesting information, it seems that she is a tour guide which was in the territory not specially. She had talked about trams and about the trolley buses.
The story is such, first trolleybus routes was launched only in the middle of the XX century. Estimate, the difference between the appearance of the tram and trolleybus in Nizhny Novgorod over 50 years. Several experienced drivers of buses were sent to study in Moscow, the case was unfamiliar and responsibly. One of these drivers later became the Director of depot. And these reliable people transported passengers only from Gorky square to square of Minin. As I understand it, Gorky square was then called as “1 May”, what we can be seen on the exhibit-trolleybus. The story was enticing, and we wanted to get into the Museum of history of tram and trolleybus, already with tickets, to use excursion.
Not on purpose, we climbed into the modern tram which standing on real rails. The instrument panel impresses by the number of switches and analog devices. Back to the “history” – now everything is clear, that’s lever – just pull.
In the Museum there is a unique technique.

A simplified diagram of the tram
In order to be sure to explain to children what is what in the exhibit, a simple drawing.
- Wagon bogie.Between the wheels is brake.
- The current collector. Also yoke. Also pantograph. Also just arc.
- Cabin, inside of which is driving controller – lever, instead steering. In the modern trams, instead of a lever pedal is applied.
- saloon of tram.
- «Sausage» – coupling for connection between wagons. in former times children riding on this.
Approximate management process tram:the driver raise the pantograph (“arc”) and connects the wagon, gradually turning the handle of the controller or by pressing on the pedal gives on traction engines more and more current, and the tram accelerates. On reaching the desired speed, the driver sets the handle of the controller to the zero position, the current is switched off and the wagon is driving coasting. For braking the controller is installed in the brake position.
Availability excursions and signs. Not high cost. Interesting specimens techniques.
Inconvenient location, in terms of the nearest stops. Some difficulties in order to get into the Museum individually.
