city Information

The story is short. It was founded in 1221 at the confluence of two rivers: The Oka and Volga. It was once an Outpost to repel Mongol and other invaders. The symbol of this remains Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin – one of the main attractions of Nizhny Novgorod. Later, the city was called “pocket of Russia”, because on its territory (in the original province) was held the largest Russian fair and through it passed the main so-called trade routes.

Another historical event that influenced the fate of Russia is firmly connected with Nizhny Novgorod – the campaign of Minin and Pozharsky to Moscow, which freed the country from the poles, began in Nizhny Novgorod!

In Soviet times, the city was called Gorky , in honor of the then famous writer and poet Maxim Gorky (Peshkov). The main symbol, perhaps, is GAZ – Gorky automobile plant.

Nizhny Novgorod Is now the Capital of the Volga region. Due to the fact that by modern standards it is very close to Moscow (about 400 kilometers), it is lost in the shadow of the capital and Nizhny Novgorod Strigino airport and is a reserve airfield for Moscow. Of the modern attractions, only cable car.

Weather. The climate is moderately cold (the average temperature is 4 degrees). The lowest amount of precipitation in March, the highest in July. The average temperature in July is 19 degrees, in January “minus 15”.

What to do

☭ the traditional list for any city (country) that an “Honest tourist” must do, this time in Nizhny Novgorod:

  • Walk along Bolshaya Pokrovskaya and the Kremlin wall
  • Ride on cable car
  • Walk through Fedorovsky embankment in the evening to watch the sunset. Nizhny Novgorod is the capital of sunsets!!!
  • Try “The very Shawarma on srednom”

Shawarma dubious “must have”, but still, at the time, and “Revisorro” on their “stall” left a sticker and “heads and Tails” tasted, not to mention any other travel bloggers. Once it was very tasty, over time, or we got bored, or slightly “spoiled”. It still happens once a month, we stop by and buy a couple. We do without delivery.

This is what “ the same Shawarma on medium ” looks like:

Main attractions-symbols

☢ all the top attractions are perfectly described in the article ” Main sights of Nizhny Novgorod with photos“. Here is the briefest list. The most-the most. Of course, it intersects with the list of “what to do in the Bottom”.

Kremlin the main historical monument and administrative center of the city
Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Central Nizhny Novgorod pedestrian street
The cable car is the longest suspension road in Europe. A great “attraction”, better of the majority “devil’s wheels”.
Football stadium Together with the Nevsky temple, they create a beautiful ensemble, which offers an excellent view from the Fedorovsky embankment.

another symbol of Nizhny Novgorod is the automobile plant, although it is not so well known now, but you can’t miss it here. This is still a Story!

Entertainment in Nizhny Novgorod

☃ in 2020, we have: 1 zoo, 7 bowling clubs, 4 trampoline centers, 9 laser tag arenas, 1 Dolphinarium, a water Park in Kstovo (15 kilometers) and is being built in the city, 4 karting tracks, a circus, an uncountable number of quests. More information about prices can be found in the corresponding articles:

How to get to Nizhny Novgorod

⚓ the City is located on the m-7 highway, Moscow-Nizhny Novgorod – Kazan, so it is cheap, but you can take a long bus ride. Or with the comfort of a car.

  • Moscow-NN 400 kilometers
  • Saint Petersburg-Nizhny Novgorod 1300 kilometers
  • Kazan is about 400 kilometers away

from Moscow to Nizhny Novgorod railway station “Swifts”, “Peregrines” and other “birds” can “fly” for 3.5 hours and seats at a price comparable to a bus. The most convenient way, in my opinion. Regular trains can travel eight hours or more. There are also many trains from other cities, and this is probably the best option.

15 kilometers from the center, on the outskirts of the city is Nizhny Novgorod airport “Strigino”. Flight. There is an article on the blog about how to get from Strigino airport to the center of Nizhny Novgorod (the same article keeps up-to-date information about the cost of public transport in Nino and payment options) . For Muscovites on the blog article flight Schedule Nizhny Novgorod Moscow (there is also a train schedule).

Also, as a few exotic way – on the ship, for example, from the same Moscow. Although usually, this is a walk back and forth…

Hostels, hotels, apartments and Nizhny Novgorod districts

❤ it is Worth noting that Nizhny Novgorod is divided into the so-called upper and lower parts. The lower one is more “working”, and the upper one is somewhat more prestigious. The most, let’s say, dangerous area is probably Avtozavodsky. Although this is more of a bad name from the old days. The main attractions and entertainment are located in the upper part, closer to the center-the Nizhny Novgorod district. A little further from the center along the high Bank of the Oka is a Soviet and Prioksky.

the Railway station is located in the Kanavinsky district (the places around it also have a somewhat dubious reputation), along the Volga there are Moskovsky and Sormovsky, and along the Oka, respectively, Leninsky and Avtozavodsky are remote. Of the large standard ones, Marins Park. In a separate article, you can read more about hotels in Nizhny Novgorod near the railway station and a little bit about the situation around.

the Airport belongs to the Avtozavodsky district. Fifty meters from the airport there is a” private ” hotel (I have never seen any free places on the booking sites), for business travelers I would still recommend ” Wave ” if you need to get closer to departures. In General, the situation is described in the article how to get from Nizhny Novgorod airport to the city.

Prices in 2023 average 3000-3500 rubles per day for two guests. For tourists, I would recommend something like Azimut hotel, views of Strelka are excellent, there is a place to walk and the center is close.

Where to eat in Nizhny Novgorod

☕ there is a separate article about cheap places in the center where to eat in Nizhny Novgorod. I would add more to it:

ExpeditionRestaurant Northern cuisine. Expensive, but colorful and interesting.
PyatkinRussian cuisine. It’s also very expensive.

most cafes and restaurants are located on the main streets and squares: Bolshaya Pokrovskaya, Rozhdestvenskaya, Gorky square.
